If you dig spine-chilling horror and climatic build-ups that can make grown men cry, pull out the popcorn, put a waterproof on your seat and turn up the telly nice and loud. Our big reveal is four of the scariest movies of all time. We’re not talking flesh-eating zombies or werewolves on celluloid; we’re talking intense psycho-thrillers that are big, bad and seriously believable.
So, if your quiet Canadian existence needs a rev or you need a good excuse to cuddle up to your new lady friend, here are four cracking movies that have terrified generations of film buffs right out of their socks:
When a Stranger Calls – 1979 & 2006
Babysitter and high school student, Jill Johnson, starts getting creepy anonymous phone calls that scare her out of her wits. The caller repeatedly asks whether she has checked the children recently and promptly hangs up.
After several calls, the traumatised youngster contacts the police. They track the next phone call and discover it is made from inside the house! Spoiler alert; the babysitter survives but the children don’t and seven years on the calls start up all over again. The 2006 remake of When a Stanger Calls is a Netflix original and is available as a download today!
Blair Witch Project – 1999
In Canada, the wilderness can be a scary place but in the backwoods of Black Hills Massachusetts scary is the understatement of the year. The Blair Witch Project tells the tale of three budding filmmakers who disappear without a trace. A year later, their video and audio footage is discovered and it’s this black and white footage you are watching. Their mission was to record the legend of a mass-murdering witch but they fell foul to the malevolence instead!
The Blair Witch Project has all the ingredients of a hair-raising horror movie, from ritualistic murders, disappearing children and witches to creepy stick figures, blood-curdling screams and bits and pieces of body parts. You can download the original film at iTunes or Netflix or watch two equally terrifying sequels – Book of Shadows and Blair Witch – but be warned, you’ll never sleep soundly in the woods again!

The Amityville Horror – 1979
Based on a true story, The Amityville Horror is about a young couple who are hounded out of their new home by evil forces. Just a year before George and Kathy Lutz and their three children take ownership of a New York mansion, the previous owner murdered his entire family in the house.
All sorts of unexplained incidents – some strange and others truly horrifying – repeatedly occur to the family and their friends. It’s a nail-biting, bed wetting humdinger of a movie that will have you literally jumping in fright. The first in the Amityville Horror film series is available as a download at multiple online movie sites.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane – 1962
Despite being a bit dated, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane will keep you glued to your seat. The five-time Oscar-nominated psycho-thriller features Hollywood luminaries Bette Davies and Jane Crawford as sisters and faded movie stars, Jane and Blanche. The latter is wheelchair bound, held captive against her will and slowly starved by her hateful and decidedly batty sister.
It’s a shocking story of envy, madness and cold-blooded murder and there are plenty of frustrating twists in the tale. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is rated one of the 400 greatest American films ever made by the American Film Institute and is available as a free download at iTunes.
