Put on your best action pants, strap in and prepare. No, not because global warming has finally decided to drop the preamble and step up the pace, but because, as everyone knows; summer is big blockbuster movie time. So, things are about to get real.
There is, as always, a long list of summer movies set for release, and deciding what to watch can be tough. That’s why we’ve had a closer look and rounded up the top 5 sure-fire box office hits that we think deserve your attention.
Releasing on April 12th, a new Hellboy was more or less a given due to the new Hollywood rule of rebooting a franchise that sees even the remotest sort of success as soon as is absolutely possible. Though, most would argue that the Guillermo Del Toro versions, staring Ron Perlman, more or less had the anti-hero character covered.
Regardless, a new Hellboy is incoming. For those who have not seen the originals, Hellboy tells the story of hellish infant that accidently finds his way onto earth, and falls under the care of a military scientist. Upon growing into an adult, the monster settles into the uncomfortable role of being used as a weapon against other monsters, even if he can’t shake the feeling that he is fighting against his own kind.
David Harbour, who can’t seem to get enough praise for his role as the ‘every man’ hero sheriff in Stranger Things, will be undergoing the obscenely long makeup process required to bring the new Hellboy to life. Even if it seems unnecessary, the new Hellboy looks promising.
Due out on June 7th, Dark Phoenix sees the continuation of the X-Men franchise, though is a bit of a bittersweet endeavour. Those who know the comics will be aware that the Phoenix Saga is one of the richest in terms of drama and character development, as well as being the most outrageously epic. Jean Grey, X-Woman and one of the most powerful psychics in the world, begins to lose herself to a suppressed, alternate personality. Insane chaos ensues. So, plenty to look forward too in other words.
On the other hand, this will be the first X-Men film without the most beloved X-Man of all; Wolverine. Fortunately though, almost all actors from the most recent film are returning, including Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult, so the loss of Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine is dulled somewhat.
Men In Black: International
A long running franchise, although many would question why it even made it beyond the first film, Men in Black is due for a fourth instalment on June 14th. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not be back, which makes the prospect of a fourth film even more questionable. Though, with Liam Neeson, Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth taking their places, it might be worth a look after all.
As most already know, Men in Black is the fictional government organisation that defends earth against any alien invasions, resulting in a combination of comedy and action shenanigans. The trailer may have a serious case of ‘trying way too hard,’ but let’s all wait and see how it looks on the big screen. Like we said; Liam Neeson plus Chris Hemsworth, plus Tessa Thompson equals potential gold.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
You knew it would be on here, so we might as well cover it; Spider-Man Far From Home is set for release on July 5th. Due to pick up the story directly after the rather startling ending of Avengers: Infinity War, it looks like Peter Parker’s emotionally manipulative demise wasn’t so permanent after all. Hey, you can call that a spoiler, but really; this movie isn’t going to be staring his ghost, right?
Tom Holland is back as the new Spider-Man, and word is that Michael Keaton will be returning as the Vulture. Though, ouch, Keaton might be a little stung that he is now old enough to portray one of the few official geriatric villains in the MCU.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Lastly we have the only non-superhero related film on the list; Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. The cast is the stuff dreams are made of, and features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Al Pacino. And with Tarantino directing you can probably already guess what the film will be like.
The focus of the story is the notorious Manson Family and their high profile Hollywood murders, and is sure to provide Tarantino with all the material he could hope for. Due out on August 9th, you can expect less superhero-style action and more drawn out scenes that ooze tension.
