With the Halloween phrase ending and the fantastically successful of Stephen King’s It movie in Canada got us thinking about clowns—and not just any clowns. The evilest, wicked and horrifying red-nosed clowns. The evil Clown is a classic horror trope, thanks to the all-too-real fear shared by thousands, if not more. It’s no wonder, then, that clowns have become the go-to character for horror films.

Pennywise the Dancing Clown
The famous ancient, shape-shifting evil victims of young children in the small town. The iconic white-painted face, red puffs of hair and glowing yellow eyes are nothing unacquainted to fans of clown horror films, but with Pennywise elongated face and frightening grin, he has become an iconic figure in the horror genre.
This clown offers a different flavour to the typical trope. Our protagonist tries on a clown costume and falls asleep wearing it. Upon awakening, he discovers that the costume has melded to his skin.
One of a trio, Cheezo is an escapee from a mental hospital. He and his two buddies run into a travelling circus, kill the three clowns present, and steal their costumes as their own. The story follows young Casey, whose life is governed by his fear of clowns. To combat this fear, his brothers take him to the circus. Which circus? The one where Cheezo, Bippo and Dippo and just murdered three clowns and have stolen their identities.
Billy is known as the puppet of the ‘Jigsaw Killer’. He was used for delivering instructions to the victims of his owner’s deadly games. His entrance quickly became iconic after the blast of the Saw franchise. Bulging cheekbones with red spirals painted, a thick and pointed nose, wearing a red bowtie and riding in on a children’s tricycle. The seeming innocence juxtaposed with the threat of his purpose heightens our fear of this clown.
Pogo the Clown
This clown was all too real. Watch as a town discovers that their seemingly friendly neighbour, who volunteers at hospitals, dresses as a clown, and seems like an okay dude, is actually a serial killer. The true story of John Wayne Gacy may be responsible for a lot of clown fears.
