The nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards were recently revealed, and as expected, early favourites such as La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight feature prominently among the nominees.
What isn’t so obvious among this illustrious list are the nominees that should be there but aren’t- the glaring exclusions. Here are some major films and artists that were snubbed this year:
No love for Deadpool
Fox-Marvel’s delicious satire on superheroes might have always been a long shot for Oscar recognition, but there was still considerable buzz that Ryan Reynolds and the film would be recognised, especially after it received Golden Globe, Producer’s Guild of America, Writers Guild and Directors Guild nominations. Unfortunately, Deadpool’s razor sharp wit will not make an appearance sat this year’s ceremony.
Captain America denied
While the comic book movies Doctor Strange (Best Visual Effects) and Suicide Squad (Best Hair and Makeup) scored nominations, Captain America: Civil War was left out in the cold with no nominations.
Best Actor Snubs
What do screen legend Tom Hanks and up-and-coming actor Aaron-Taylor-Johnson have in common? They were both denied nominations for Best Actor despite putting in acclaimed performances. Taylor-Johnson’s snub was particularly surprising, as he won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Nocturnal Animals. Hanks’s mission was also glaring, as he has a history of being nominated by The Academy, and was first thought as a shoo-in for a Best Actor nomination when Sully first hit theatres However, he was subsequently overlooked by all the major Awards shows.
Annette Benning has already been denied the Best Actress award twice by the Academy (Hillary Swank won both times), and now she has been denied a nomination for her acclaimed performance in 20th Century Women. Her co-star Greta Gerwig was also overlooked, while Taraji. P Henson failed to impress Academy members with her performance in Hidden Figures.
Amy Adams (also a regular nominee) was another favourite for her role in the sci-fi drama Arrival, and the film itself earned 8 nominations, but surprisingly, there was no Awards love for Adams.
While Denzel Washington was recognised in the Best Actor category for his work in Fences, his directing was overlooked. Lion director Garth Davis was hoping for a first-time director nomination, but will have to be satisfied with the film itself being nominated. Directing legend Martin Scorsese was also expected to be nominated for his film Silence, but the nominations chairs were obviously full this year.
